Abstract

Essential oils from the leaves and flowering tops of Salvia glutinosa L. were obtained by hydrodistillation. The oil content was 0.05% (v/w), and 0.03% (v/w), for the leaves and the flowering tops, respectively. The oil composition was determined by GC and GC/MS. Sixty and seventy-four compounds were identified in the oils from leaves and flowering tops, respectively. Both oils were rich in sequiterpenes, with γ-muurolene (15.1–18.7%) as the major component. An antibacterial screening showed that both oils were inactive against Gram (+) and Gram (-) bacteria.
