Abstract
This essay chronicles the service‐learning journey of 12 students who conducted communication audits for non‐profit community agencies. Using knowledge of communication theory and multiple data‐gathering and analysis methods, students assessed communication clarity and efficiency within the community agencies. Students reported gaining richer understanding of organizational communication concepts and greater confidence in their communication skills than they possessed previously. Students said that these experiences raised their awareness of community needs, helping them develop more realistic attitudes about community involvement and demonstrating for them the importance of assuming community leadership roles. Representatives from community agencies reported high levels of satisfaction with the projects.
