The effects of positive and negative audience responses on the autonomic arousal of student speakers

Abstract

This experimental study investigated the effects of visible audience responses on the heart rate of students presenting an informative speech. The results indicate that speakers receiving negative audience responses had higher heart rates than speakers receiving positive audience responses. These findings suggest that speaker experienced stress is greater under negative than positive conditions of audience response.
