As the rhetorical product of the first American expert witness invited to appear before the British House of Commons, Benjamin Franklin's 1766 testimony has been characterized by many writers as a contrived, “rigged,” theatrical production. This study challenges these misconceptions by dissecting internal elements of the published EXAMINA TION and suggests alternative interpretations.
