Abstract

The reactivity of keto enolates with 1-chloro and 3-chloro-2-methoxycarbonylhydrazono-propylphosphonates 1 and 2 is studied. It is shown that those enolates react with the chlorohydrazone 1 to give 3-diethoxyphosphonopyrroles 5 under a mechanistic pathway which has been ascertained. With the chlorohydrazone 2 it is possible to get selectively either the pyrrole derivatives 14 or 2,3-dioxoalkylphosphonates 13, the later being of interest for the synthesis of cyclopentenones under the intramolecular Wittig-Horner reaction conditions.
