Grindability Improvement of AlSiTi Conductive Ceramic

Abstract

Experimental investigation was done to improve grindability aspects of conductive ceramic using cryogenic coolant. We made mathematical models of response variables, such as grinding force, surface roughness, and subsurface damage length in terms of grinding process parameters. Conductive ceramic material, also known as AlSiTi, is ceramic matrix composite. It has better thermal and electric conductivity compared to conventional ceramics. Normally, ceramic materials are ground without using coolants. But the conductive ceramics can be ground using coolants due to improved thermal properties. Grinding is an important machining process especially for ceramic materials. Hence, it is important to study the grindability aspects of AlSiTi material using cryogenic coolants and to suggest the optimum combination of process parameters that leads to high production rate along with better surface integrity. Present research work studies for the first time the effect of coolant on the advanced ceramic.
