Porous Hydroxyapatite Scaffolds with Unidirectional Macrochannels Prepared via Ice/Fiber-Templated Method

Abstract

A novel ice/fiber-templated method was employed for the fabrication of hydroxyapatite scaffolds with the macro-channels of 250–350μm and lamellae spacings of 5–130μm. The macrochannels were formed by fibers, and the lamellae spacings were formed by ice crystals. As the final porosity of the ice/fiber-templated hydroxyapatite scaffolds increased from 56%to 73.6%, the corresponding compressive strengths decreased from 2.08 to 0.98 MPa. The results indicated that the microstructures and compressive strengths of the ice/fiber-templated hydroxyapatite scaffolds could be controlled by varying the solid loadings and packing densities of fibers.
