Abstract

The flow lines, microstructure, and mechanical properties of a flow control formed (FCF) 4032 aluminum alloy scroll plate were studied in this paper. The influence of back pressure on the formation process was investigated and a scroll plate with ideal shape and size accuracy was formed. The results show that with the increase of back pressure the formation of scroll wrap improves while the effective stress and extrusion load increases rapidly. Specific levels of back pressure have an application scope. The flow lines generally distribute along the shape of the scroll plate. The microstructures and mechanical properties of formed scroll plates were examined. The microstructure in the center of the scroll wrap exhibits obvious directionality and the Al grains are elongated along the extrusion direction. The microstructures of the end plate and top part of the wrap maintain cast structures because of low levels of deformation. The mechanical properties of scroll plate completely meet its operating requirements.
