ABSTRACT

The present research investigates the effect of binder force in flanging of aluminum alloy sheets. FEM simulation of stretch flange forming is realized for zero, constant, and fixed binder forces. The finite element simulation is carried out to evaluate strain (circumferential and radial), flange thickness, position of commencement, and extension of cracks due to variation of binder force. The investigations reveal that the binder force has a significant effect on punch load, flange thickness (percentage thinning), circumferential and radial strain distribution, and commencement and extension of edge cracks. The results of FEM simulation are validated with results obtained by experimentation, and an excellent agreement is obtained.
