ABSTRACT

Cutting tool performance plays a key role in various machining sectors because of its significant impact on production cost, product quality, and cutting tool life. A comprehensive evaluation of machinability characteristics offered a better way of selecting the proper cutting tool and cutting velocity to enhance the product quality. To establish a relationship between variation in medium ranges of cutting velocity to temperature, force, surface finish, and chip morphology affect the machining of Monel alloy 400, a hard-to-machine material, determining coated TiAlN carbide cutting tool performance. This work investigates the comparative cutting performance of tungsten carbide cutting inserts (uncoated and TiAlN coated) during the turning of Monel alloy 400 under dry condition at varying cutting velocities. Cutting force, cutting temperature, surface quality parameter, and chip morphology have been determined to correlate with tool wear for varied cutting velocity to reason out cutting tool performance. EDS analysis on the worn tool was investigated to identify the tool’s wear-related mechanisms under various cutting conditions. Coated TiAlN tools have a lower cutting zone temperature and cutting force than uncoated tools, which leads to better surface quality and less insert wear with cutting velocity.
