Abstract:
To pursue further advancements in science it has become increasingly necessary to engage in international partnerships. Management of these partnerships is especially challenging. In addition to the challenges normally associated with conventional projects, these projects are exposed to significant scientific risk, greater ambiguities, globally dispersed technical expertise, and political and cultural influence from sponsoring countries. This study focuses on two of these challenges: the influences of politics and culture. Two case studies are presented: the Joint European Torus (JET) and the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). The objectives of this article are to raise awareness of these challenges, better understand them, and provide useful insight to those who must manage large-scale international science projects.
