Sustainability of Taiwan's Aquaculture Industry and Its Ties to the United States— An Exploratory Qualitative Case Study

ABSTRACT

Assessment of fish pond production sustainability was conducted in Taiwan. An exploratory qualitative case study of open-ended interviews with five Taiwanese individuals in the industry was employed to assess five areas of concern. Taiwan's march toward sustainability and the farmers' decision-making process were most influenced by economics and profitability that were tied to the United States. A willingness to invest in a long-term plan, to alter farming techniques, and to conserve resources is needed. A demonstration model of education like that practiced by extension education in the United States is warranted, and would include workshops, multiple increments, and effective modeling with practice.
