The Roots of Envy: The Unaesthetic Experience of the Tantalized/Dispossessed Self

Introduction

IN VOLUME 19, NUMBER 3, Julie Gerhardt's articles have the following amendments.

On page 286, last paragraph, the sentence should be corrected as follows. I was able to shift my attention away from the more symbolic encodings to the less symbolic deposits stored in the implicit or unrepressed unconscious (Mancia, 2006).

On page 319, at the end of the third full paragraph there should be the following. While I agree in principle, by subsuming all external factors to the parsimonious and deliberately abstract model of containment, the child's specific need for the mother's emotional accessibility, emotional resonance and unconscious identification with her child's abject split-off states gets lost in this overly broad model.

On page 320, the last paragraph should end with the following. Indeed, I confess uneasiness with the term “entitlement” as it takes the object's view of the self and is prematurely categorical as being linked to phantasies of unconscious omnipotence while not doing justice to the legitimacy of what the infant both needed and deserved.
