Abstract

In a brief exploration of our psychoanalytic heritage given to new postdoctoral graduates in the field, Martin S. Bergmann touches upon psychoanalysis' precedents in Greek drama and philosophy and Shakespeare's foreshadowing of psychoanalytic themes and motivations. He details the special types of listening required by the successful psychoanalyst. He also discusses historical debates as to who is analyzable, the difference between interpretation and reconstruction, the moment of psychoanalysis' birth, and the importance of the Oedipus complex.
