1. Some of these accusations can be found in Carlos López Rosell, ‘Flotats pierde su poder en el TNC’, ElPeriódico (17 December 1997), p. 51; Vicente Molina Foix, ‘Josep Maria Flotats: “Pueden pedirme eficacia, pero no solidaridad política”’, El País (Domingo] (28 September 1997), pp. 9–10; Josep Palau i Fabre, ‘Teatro Nacional de Catalunya?’, Avui (28 September 2002), p. 42; Opinió, ‘Professionals del teatre demanarán la dimissió de Joan Maria Pujals’, Avui (29 September 1997), p. 42; Santiago Fondevila, ‘El conseller Joan Maria Pujals destituye a Flotats como director del TNC’, La Vanguardia (24 September 1997), p. 43.

2. Some reactions to Belbel's appointment can be found in: Elena Cuesta, ‘Sergi Belbel dirigirá el TNC a partir de 2006 para potenciar la creación contemporánea’, El Mundo [online] (19 March 2005) at w3.elmundo.es/papel/2005/03/19/catalunya/1772766.html [accessed 24 April 2007]; María Güell, ‘Sergi Belbel asumirá la dirección del TNC’, ABC [online] (19 March 2005) at www.abc.es/hemeroteca/historico-19-03-2005/abc/Espectaculos/sergi-belbel-asumira-la-direccion-del-teatro-nacional-de-cataluña_201291963518.html [accessed 24 April 2007].

3. For an introduction to Belbel's work as a playwright see David George's article in this issue of CTR, ‘Beyond the Local: Sergi Belbel and Forasters', 398–410.

4. The Teatro Independiente developed in Spain during the 1960s and 1970s. Led by groups such as Els Joglars, Goliardos, Tábano – amongst others – its aim was to present alternative modes of theatre production and it generally privileged physical theatre over text-based performance. It crucially represented a different facet of Spain's oppositional theatre to that of the playwrights Antonio Buero Vallejo, Alfonso Sastre or Josep Maria Benet i Jornet.

5. Playwrights who attended Sanchis Sinisterra's writing workshops at the Sala Beckett include Lluïsa Cunillé and Paco Zarzoso. For further details, see Sharon Feldman's article, ‘The Sala Beckett and the Zero Degree of Theatricality: From Lluïsa Cunillé to Carles Batlle’, in this issue of CTR, 370–384.

7. El alcalde de Zalamea (The Mayor of Zalamea) by Pedro Calderón de la Barca (and directed by Belbel) was staged in 2000–01, and José Sanchis Sinisterra's El lector por horas (Reader by the Hour) was included in the 1998–99 season. For more information about the TNC's past seasons go to www.tnc.cat/ca/index.html

8. The play that Belbel refers to here is Forasters (2004). The 2007 season has included a production of Tirso de Molina's Don Gil de las calzas verdes (Don Gil of the Green Breeches).
