ABSTRACT
Shoots of Hemidesmus indicus cultured in Murashige and Skoog (MS-1) containing 6-benzyladenine (10 μM) and kinetin (5 μM) and MS-2 containing indole-3-acetic acid (2 μM) were assessed for rutin and quercetin by HPTLC and mass spectrometry. The constituents were not detected when cultured in the MS-1 medium or when supplemented with elicitors yeast extract or salicylic acid. However, an upstream metabolite, kaempferol, was detected. The F3ʹ5ʹH and F3ʹH genes related to the conversion of kaempferol to quercetin were not expressed which justified the absence of rutin.
