Using functional magnetic resonance imaging in psychotherapy research: A brief introduction to concepts, methods, and task selection

Abstract

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) has become an increasingly important methodology in the study of psychotherapy outcome and process. In this article, the authors offer a brief introduction to the use of fMRI in psychotherapy research aimed primarily at the informed clinician or investigator and with the goal of facilitating an understanding of study design and interpretation of research findings. After introducing the method and offering a rationale for its use in the study of psychotherapy, the authors outline major issues in fMRI data collection and analysis and emphasize the central role of the tasks used during the imaging session as critical to the interpretation of findings. They discuss how task selection influences the conclusions that can be drawn from fMRI studies of psychotherapeutic intervention and close with recommendations and caveats for the consumer of fMRI/psychotherapy research.

ABSTRACT

Funktionelle Magnetresonanztomographie (fMRI) ist zu einer zunehmend wichtigeren Methodik in Psychotherapie-Ergebnis- und Psychotherapie-Prozess-Studien geworden. In diesem Artikel geben die Autoren eine kurze Einleitung in die Anwendung der fMRI in der Psychotherapieforschung, vornehmlich an den sachkundigen Kliniker oder Forscher gerichtet mit dem Ziel das Verständnis des Studiendesigns und der Interpretation der Forschungsergebnisse zu erleichtern. Nach der Einführung der Methode und dem Angebot einer Begründung für die Anwendung in Psychotherapiestudien, fassen die Autoren wesentliche Themen des Datensammelns und der Datenanalyse bei der fMRI zusammen und betonen die zentrale Rolle der Aufgabe, welche während der Bildgebung verwendet wird sowie deren kritischen Einfluss auf die Interpretation der Ergebnisse. Sie diskutieren wie die Auswahl der Aufgabe die Schlussfolgerungen, die aus psychotherapeutischen Interventionsstudien gezogen werden können, beeinflusst und enden mit Empfehlungen und Vorsichtmaßnahmen für Anwender von fMRI in Psychotherapieforschung.

RÉSUMÉ

L'imagerie par résonnance magnétique fonctionnelle (IRMf) est devenue une méthode de plus en plus importante dans l’étude des processus et des résultats de la psychothérapie. Dans cet article, les auteurs offrent une brève introduction à l'utilisation de l'IRMf dans la recherche en psychothérapie, destiné principalement aux cliniciens informées et aux investigateurs, et avec le but de faciliter la compréhension du design des études et de l'interprétation des résultats. Après une introduction à la méthode une justification de son utilisation dans l’étude de la psychothérapie, les auteurs soulignent les questions majeures dans la récolte et l'analyse de données IRMf , et mettent en lumière le rôle central des tâches utilisées au cours de la séance d'imagerie pour l'interprétation des résultats. Ils discutent comment la sélection de tâche influence les conclusions qui peuvent être tirées de ces études IRMf et terminent par quelques recommandations et avertissements pour le consommateur de IRMf/recherche en psychothérapie.

La risonanza magnetica funzionale (fMRI) è diventata una metodologia sempre più importante per lo studio della psicoterapia sia di esito sia di processo. In questo articolo, gli autori offrono una breve introduzione all'uso di fMRI in psicoterapia finalizzata in primo luogo al medico o ricercatore informato e con l'obiettivo di facilitare la comprensione del progetto di studio e l'interpretazione dei risultati della ricerca. Dopo l'introduzione del metodo si tenta di offrire una logica per il suo utilizzo nello studio di psicoterapia, gli autori sottolineano importanti questioni sulla raccolta e analisi dei dati fMRI e enfatizzano il ruolo centrale dei compiti usati durante il periodo di acquisizione delle immagini come critica all'interpretazione dei risultati. Si discute, inoltre, come la selezione del compito influenza le conclusioni che potrebbero essere tratte dagli studi di fMRI rispetto agli interventi psicoterapeutici e le avvertenze da effettuare a tutti coloro che fanno uso di questa tecnica.
