Volunteer client attachment moderates the relationship between trainee therapist attachment and therapist interventions

Abstract

This study explored the association between attachment security of therapists (alone and in interaction with clients' attachment) and therapist interventions in early sessions of short-term psychotherapy. Trainee therapists and volunteer clients (N=24) in short-term therapy completed the Experiences in Close Relationship Scale (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) as a measure of adult romantic attachment orientations. Therapist interventions were identified and related to client and therapist attachment orientation. Results indicated that in early therapy sessions client attachment moderated the relationship between therapist attachment and therapist interventions. Specifically, avoidantly attached therapists intervened with more directive interventions when clients were high in attachment avoidance.

Diese Studie untersucht die Beziehung zwischen der Bindungssicherheit der Therapeuten (allein und die Interaktion mit der Bindung der Klienten) und der therapeutischen Intervention in Kurzzeitpsychotherapie. Therapeuten in der Ausbildung und freiwillige Klienten (N = 24) in Kurzzeitpsychotherapie füllten den Bindungsfragebogen „Experiences in Close Relationship Sclae“ (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) als ein Maß für romantische Bindungsorientierung bei Erwachsenen aus. Therapeutische Interventionen wurden identifiziert und der Bindungsorientierung der Therapeuten und Klienten zugeordnet. RÉSUMÉ

Cette étude a exploré l'association entre la sécurité de l'attachement des thérapeutes (seule et en interaction avec l'attachement des clients) et les interventions des thérapeutes dans des séances précoces de psychothérapie brève. Des thérapeutes en formation et des clients volontaires (N = 24) ont rempli l'échelle d'expériences dans une relation proche (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) comme mesure des orientations d'attachement adulte romantiques. Les interventions du thérapeute étaient identifiées et reliées aux orientations d'attachement du client et du thérapeute. Les résultats ont montré que dans les séances précoces de thérapie, l'attachement du client modérait la relation entre l'attachement du thérapeute et les interventions du thérapeute. Spécifiquement, les thérapeutes attachés de manière évitant formulaient plus d'interventions directives lorsque les clients étaient hauts dans l'attachement évitant.

Este estudo explora a associação entre a sgurança de vinculação do terapeuta (sozinho ou em interacção com a vinculação do paciente) e as intervenç[otilde]es do terapeuta nas sess[otilde]es iniciais de psicoterapia breve. Terapeutas em treino e clientes voluntários (N = 24) em psicoterapia breve completaram o Experiences in Close Relationship Scale (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) como medida de orientação de vinculação romântica do adulto. As intervenç[otilde]es do terapeuta foram identificadas e relacionadas com a orientação de vinculação do cliente e do terapeuta.Os resultados indicam que nas sess[otilde]es iniciais de terapia, o estilo de vinculação do cliente modera a relação entre a vinculação do terapeuta e a intervenção terapêutica. Questo studio esplora le relazione tra attaccamento sicuro del terapeuta (sia solo sia in interazione con il paziente) e gli interventi del terapeuta nella prima sessione di una psicoterapia a breve termine. Il terapeuta in formazione e il cliente volontario (N = 24) in una psicoterapia a breve termine completano il questionario Experiences in Close Relationship Scale (Brennan, Clark, & Shaver, 1998) come misura dell'attaccamento adulto. Gli interventi terapeutici sono stati identificati e correlati al tipo di attaccamento del terapeuta e del cliente. I risultati indicano che nella prima sessione di terapia l'attaccamento del cliente modera la relazione tra l'attaccamento del terapeuta e gli interventi terapeutici. Specificamente, il terapeuta con un attaccamento evitante interviene con una maggiore assertività quando il cliente ha un forte attaccamento evitante.
