The use of therapist self-disclosure: Clinical psychology trainees' experiences

Abstract

This qualitative study examined clinical psychology trainees' experiences of using, or not using, therapist self-disclosure and their experience of training and supervision on this issue. Fourteen trainees were interviewed and their accounts analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, yielding nine themes organized into two domains. The first domain (“the decision in the moment”) concerned participants' struggle with decision making about disclosure; the second (“the developing therapist”) reflected their evolving ideas about disclosure over training and within the wider philosophical context of therapy. The dilemmas surrounding disclosure seemed to distill some central issues associated with participants' developing professional therapist identity. Working out one's position on self-disclosure is a challenge that trainee therapists may require support in mastering.

Diese qualitative Studie untersuchte Erfahrungen von angehenden klinischen Psychotherapeuten – welche entweder Selbstöffnung anwendeten oder nicht – auf die Trainingserfahrung und Supervision. 14 angehende Therapeuten wurden interviewt und deren Berichte wurden mit Hilfe der “Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis” untersucht. Neun Themen, welche in zwei Bereiche organisiert waren, traten hervor. Der erste Bereich (“the decision in the moment”) betraf Teilnehmer, die sich mit der Entscheidungsfindung bzgl. Selbstöffnung abmühten, der zweite Bereich (“the developing therapist”) reflektierte die entstehenden Ideen über Öffnung im Training und im umfassenderen philosophischen Kontext der Therapie. Das Dilemma, welches die Öffnung umgibt, scheint einige zentrale Probleme, welche mit der Entwicklung einer professionellen Identität als Therapeut einhergeht, zusammenzufassen. Die eigene Position gegenüber Selbstöffnung herauszuarbeiten, ist eine Herausforderung, für welche angehende Therapeuten Hilfe benötigen könnten.

Cette étude qualitative a examine les expériences de jeunes recrues de psychologie clinique d'utiliser, ou de ne pas utiliser, la révélation de soi et leur expérience de formation et de supervision concernant ce sujet. Quatorze thérapeutes en formation ont été interrogés et leur compte rendu analysé à l'aide d'une analyse interprétative phénoménologique, produisant neuf thèmes organisés en deux domaines. Le premier domaine (la décision dans le moment) concernait la lutte des participants sur la prise de décision sur la révélation; le second (le développement du thérapeute) reflétait l’évolution de leurs idées sur la révélation au cours de la formation et dans le cadre du contexte philosophique plus large de la thérapie. Les dilemmes qui entourent la révélation semblent distiller quelques questions centrales associées avec le développement de l'identité professionnelle des participants. Élaborer une position personnelle sur la révélation de soi est un challenge pour les thérapeutes en formation qui nécessite un soutien pour être maitrisé.

Este estudo qualitativo examinou a experiência de psicólogos clínicos estagiários com o uso, ou não uso, da auto-revelação do terapeuta e a sua experiências de treino e supervisão neste tema. Catorze estagiários foram entrevistados e as suas contas analisadas usando análise interpretativa fenomenológica, considerando nove temas organizados em dois domínios. O primeiro domínio (“a decisão no momento”) respeita ao desafio dos participantes na tomada de decis[otilde]es sobre a revelação (disclosure); o segundo (“o terapeuta em desenvolvimento”) reflecte as suas ideias em evolução sobre revelação (disclosure) ao longo do estágio e dentro do contexto filosófico mais amplo da terapia. Os dilemas à volta da revelação (disclosure) pareceram transparecer algumas quest[otilde]es centrais de cada participante, associadas com o desenvolvimento da sua identidade profissional enquanto terapeuta. Trabalhar a posição pessoal relativamente à auto-revelação (self-disclosure) é um desafio no qual os estagiários em treino para terapeutas podem necessitar de suporte.

Questo studio qualitativo esamina l'uso o meno nell'esperienza formativa clinica psicologica dell'autosvelamento da parte del terapeuta, nella propria esperienza di formazione e supervisione su questo tema. Quattordici tirocinanti sono stati intervistati e i loro trascritti analizzati utilizzando una analisi interpretativa fenomenologica. Nove temi sono stati organizzati in due domini. Il primo dominio (“la decisione del momento”), riguarda partecipanti interessati al processo decisionale e alla sua divulgazione, la seconda (“il terapeuta in via di sviluppo”) riflette le loro idee in evoluzione sulla divulgazione delle proprie informazioni personali durante la formazione e nel pi[ugrave] ampio contesto filosofico della terapia. Le perplessità suscitate dalle divulgazione sembravano sollevare alcune questioni centrali associate ai allo sviluppo dell'identità professionale di terapeuta. Elaborare la propria posizione sull'autosvelamento è una cambiamento per il quale i terapeuti in formazione potrebbero richiedere un supporto specifico.
