Psychotherapy research in developing countries: The case of Latin America

Abstract

This article describes the state of psychotherapy research in Latin America, a developing region, by means of its scientific production as reflected in international and Latin American publications, as well as through a survey and in-depth interviews with clinicians and researchers from the region. The Latin American publication rate is still low in international journals, which stands in contrast with the high level of publication within the region. The survey reveals an interest in research as well as a limited use of research in clinical practice, while exposing the difficulties of researching and publishing. The in-depth interviews, which cover most of the region, specify Latin America's shortcomings and obstacles to researching, as well as its facilitating factors and comparative advantages. The results are discussed within the framework of the colonizer-colonized relationship, Latin American identity, and the creative integration of developed and developing regions.

L'articolo descrive lo stato della ricerca in psicoterapia in America Latina, una regione in via di sviluppo, e allo scopo di conoscerne la produzione scientifica, sono stati utilizzati questionari e interviste approfondite con clinici e ricercatori dell'America Latina.

Il loro livello di pubblicazioni su riviste internazionali è ancora basso, mentre numerose sono invece le pubblicazioni su riviste nazionali.

L'indagine rileva un interesse nella ricerca ma anche un uso limitato della ricerca nella pratica clinica, mettendo in evidenza la difficoltà a progettare ricerche e conseguenti pubblicazioni. Infatti, dall'intervista più approfondita, emergono i limiti e le difficoltà a fare ricerca, come anche i fattori favorenti e i relativi vantaggi. I risultati emersi sembrerebbero attribuibili all'identità così eterogenea dell'America Latina, con popoli colonizzatori e popoli colonizzati, quindi fatta di regioni sviluppate e di altre in via di sviluppo.

Dieser Artikel beschreibt den Stand der Psychotherapieforschung in Lateinamerika, einer Entwicklungsregion, hinsichtlich der wissenschaftlichen Produktivität, gemessen an internationalen und lateinamerikanischen Publikationen, sowie durch eine Umfrage und detaillierte Interviews mit Klinikern und Wissenschaftlern der Region. Die lateinamerikanische Publikationsrate ist immer noch niedrig in internationalen Zeitschriften, eine Tatsache, die im Kontrast steht zu der hohen Anzahl an Publikationen innerhalb der Region. Die Umfrage offenbarte ein allgemeines Forschungsinteresse sowie einen begrenzten Einsatz der Forschung in der klinischen Praxis und die Schwierigkeiten in der Forschung und beim Publizieren. Die detaillierten Interviews, welche den größten Teil der Region abdeckten, spezifizierten Latein Amerikas Mängel und Hindernisse im Bereich der Forschung, sowie auch erleichternde Faktoren und vergleichbare Vorteile. Die Ergebnisse werden vor dem Hintergrund der “Colonizer-Colonized” Beziehung, der lateinamerikanischen Identität und der kreativen Integration von entwickelten und Entwicklungsregionen diskutiert

Este artigo descreve o estado da investigação em psicoterapia na América Latina, uma região em desenvolvimento, recorrendo à produção científica refletida em publicações internacionais e Latino-Americanas bem como a uma pesquisa e entrevistas intensivas realizadas a clínicos e investigadores da região. A taxa de publicações da América Latina em jornais internacionais é ainda reduzida, o que contrasta com o elevado nível de publicações verificado dentro da própria região. A pesquisa realizada aponta para o interesse na investigação bem como para o uso limitado da investigação na prática clínica, ao mesmo tempo que expõe as dificuldades que decorrem da investigação e publicação. As entrevistas intensivas, que abarcam a maior parte da região, especificam os défices e obstáculos bem como os fatores facilitadores e as vantagens comparativas da investigação na América Latina. Os resultados são discutidos no quadro da relação colonizado-colonizador, da identidade Latino-Americana e da integração criativa das regiões desenvolvidas e em desenvolvimento.
