Assessment of patient interpersonal behavior: Development and validation of a rating scale

Abstract

Objective: Patient in-session interpersonal behavior, as part of the therapeutic alliance, is an important aspect of the psychotherapy process and impacts treatment outcome. In the present study, the development and validation of a rating scale of patient in-session interpersonal behavior is described. Method: A 10-item rating scale, the Assessment Form of Patient Interpersonal Behavior (AFPIB), was developed using an inductive procedure. The AFPIB was then validated in a sample of patients with hypochondriasis (N = 30), by having two independent raters assess patients’ interpersonal behaviors shown in videotaped psychotherapy sessions (N = 60). Results: The AFPIB demonstrated good reliability and validity. Conclusions: Thus, the AFPIB seems to be a promising rating scale for the assessment of patient interpersonal behavior shown in psychotherapy sessions.

Obiettivo: Il comportamento interpersonale in seduta del paziente, come parte della alleanza terapeutica, è un aspetto importante del processo psicoterapeutico e condiziona l'esito del trattamento. In questo studio viene descritto lo sviluppo e la validazione di una scala di valutazione del comportamento interpersonale in seduta del paziente. Metodo: è stata elaborata una scala di valutazione a 10-item, la Assessment Form of Patient Interpersonal Behavior (AFPIB), utilizzando un procedimento induttivo. La AFPIB è stata validata in un campione di pazienti con ipocondria (n=30), con due siglatori indipendenti che hanno valutato i comportamenti interpersonali dei pazienti osservati in sedute di psicoterapia videoregistrate (N=60). Risultati: La AFPIB ha dimostrato una buona affidabilità e validità. Conclusioni: la AFPIB sembra quindi essere una promettente scala di valutazione per la valutazione del comportamento interpersonale del paziente mostrato nel corso delle sedute di psicoterapia.

Objetivo: O comportamento interpessoal do paciente na sessão, enquanto participante da aliança terapêutica, é um aspeto importante do processo psicoterapêutico e tem impacto no resultado do tratamento. No presente estudo, é descrito o desenvolvimento e a validação de uma escala de avaliação do comportamento interpessoal do paciente na sessão. Método: Foi desenvolvida uma escala de avaliação de 10 itens, o Formulário de Avaliação do Comportamento Interpessoal do Paciente (FACIP), utilizando um procedimento indutivo. O FACIP foi depois validado numa amostra de pacientes com hipocondria (N=30) por dois juízes independentes que avaliaram o comportamento interpessoal dos pacientes tal como exibido em sessões de psicoterapia vídeogravadas (N=60). Resultados: O FACIP demonstrou uma boa confiança e validade. Conclusão: Assim, o FACIP parece ser uma escala de avaliação promissora para a apreciação do comportamento interpessoal dos pacientes em sessões psicoterapêuticas.

Zusammenfassung Ziel: Das zwischenmenschliche Verhalten von Patienten innerhalb von Therapiesitzungen ist, als Teil der therapeutischen Allianz, ein wichtiger Aspekt des Psychotherapieprozesses und beeinflusst das Behandlungsergebnis. In der vorliegenden Studie wird die Entwicklung und Validierung einer Rating Skala des zwischenmenschlichen Patientenverhaltens innerhalb der Therapiesitzung beschrieben. Methode: Eine 10 –Item Rating Skala, das Assessment Form of Patient Interpersonal Behavior (AFPIB), wurde mit Hilfe einer induktiven Vorgehensweise entwickelt. Das AFPIB wurde dann an Hand einer Stichprobe von Patienten mit Hypochondrie (N= 30) validiert, wobei zwei unabhängige Rater das zwischenmenschliche Verhalten der Patienten in Psychotherapiesitzungen an Hand Videoaufzeichnungen (N=60) bewerteten. Ergebnisse: Das AFPIB zeigt eine gute Reliabilität und Validität. Schlussfolgerung: Das AFPIB scheint eine vielversprechende Rating Skala für das Assessment zwischenmenschlichen Patientenverhaltens zu sein, welches in Psychotherapiesitzungen gezeigt wird.
