David Desser is Professor of Cinema Studies at the University of Illinois. He is the author or editor of ten books, including numerous volumes on Asian cinema. Most recently he authored a volume on 5 Fingers of Death, and has completed a book on Hong Kong cinema's globalization in the 1950s–70s. He has also contributed commentary for the Criterion DVD releases of Tokyo Story and Seven Samurai.
