It is with great sadness that the editors of Quarterly Review of Film and Video note the passing of a distinguished member of our Editorial Board, Alexander Doty. This past August, Doty was on vacation in Bermuda, when he was hit and seriously injured by a motorcycle. Taken to a hospital with critical head injuries, Doty remained in intensive care until his untimely death on August 5, 2012; he was 58 years old. As a member of the QRFV editorial board, Alexander Doty's contributions were invaluable to the journal; as professor and chair of the Department of Communication and Culture in the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University in Bloomington, Doty was a major influence on cinema studies in the 20th and 21st century. Doty's work specialized in Queer theory, and he left behind two major unfinished projects: the book “The Monstrous and the Medieval,” a study of the ways in which medieval monsters were portrayed in the cinema, co-written with Patricia Ingham; and another book-length project on melodrama in film. We join the literally thousands of people around the world who were challenged and enlightened by Alexander Doty's work in mourning his passing, and we extend our deepest sympathy to the members of his immediate family in this sad and difficult time.
