Media and Polygamy: A Critical Analysis of Sister Wives

Pages 24-38 | Published online: 17 Dec 2013

Abstract

The TLC television program Sister Wives provides audiences with a reality-based perspective of multiple-marriages. Analysis using Bourdeau's concepts of habitus and field reveals the program challenges traditional family constructs through positive portrayals of multiple-marriages. While it explicitly validates the nontraditional polygamist family composition, it implicitly reinforces patriarchal structures.
