A preliminary investigation of the relationship between message organization and listener comperehension

Pages 104-107 | Published online: 22 May 2009

Abstract

Previous studies utilizing random paragraph order as an operational definition for message disorganization have concluded that order is not an important variable with respect to listener comprehension. However, investigations randomizing the order of sentences have concluded that order is a determinant of comprehension. The present study indicates that these inconsistent findings are not necessarily a function of the difference in operational definitions.
