Riots as symbolic: A criticism and approach

Abstract

This article reviews a distinction in the assumptions which have in‐, formed rhetorical‐critical investigations of riots, demonstrations, and confrontational acts. The author argues that three questions and constraints must be systematically applied if errors are to be avoided and if the rhetorical character and rhetorical limitations of various physical acts are to be usefully probed.
