Growing from the speech communication field's increasing interest in the persuasive potential of popular art forms, this essay proposes a rhetorical perspective of the newspaper comic strip. The essay explicates the reciprocal influence of comics and society through two major sections: the first offers a theoretical exploration of the rhetorical dimensions of the comic strip medium, with special attention to Bormann's concept of fantasy themes, while the second is an historical analysis of the function of these dimensions in conveying images of women in American society.
