Building the speechwriter‐principal relationship: Minority leader Robert Michel confronts his ghost

This essay is a reflexive study of congressional ghostwriting. A prominent politician, Robert Michel (R‐Ill.), and a prominent political speechwriter, William Gavin, reflect on one another's roles in the process of speech composition. Emphasis is on the interpersonal relationship between the principal and his ghost and how that relationship structures and defines the composition process.
