Identification and the preconscious

Pages 144-156 | Published online: 22 May 2009

Abstract

Kenneth Burke's claim that the value of identification lies in its ability to integrate “partially” unconscious factors into rhetorical theory has been acknowledged, but has never been tested. This essay attempts to demonstrate their value in explaining the immediate and long‐term effects of Jonathan Edwards’ powerful sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.”
