Abstract

This paper explores the issues involved in defining, understanding, teaching, and promoting spiritual health. The legitimacy of the spiritual dimension in health has long been debated by health educators; and a trend to develop and affirm its existence currently exists in the health education profession. While this concept is not widely accepted, health educators have given greater recognition to the spiritual dimension as an important aspect of wellbeing, recognizing that spiritual considerations can be significant factors in health-related decision-making. Some health educators view spiritual health as important in our world because of the sense of alienation and lack of connectedness characterizing today's society. Research on the topic of spiritual health is sparse, and advocates must continue to explore and educate about this dimension of health.
