Pages 388-404 | Published online: 06 Jun 2009

Revitalization movements are most often counter to established institutions and values and find at least their early recruits among the relatively powerless in society. Much more rare is the revitalization movement begun among the powerful, aimed at the powerful, with significant resources available for its rhetorical campaigns. Beyond War, a contemporary anti‐nuclear organization, is just such a movement. This study provides a description and brief history of Beyond War; analyzes its messages; discusses the requirements, strategies and reception of those messages; examines the organizational components impinging on rhetorical decision‐making; and identifies key rhetorical dilemmas.
