God on Board: Zeus the Saviour, the Stern and the Stylis on a 4th-century BC red-figure Hydria from Ancient Capua (Campania, Italy)

ABSTRACT

A red-figure hydria from Capua in Badisches Landesmuseum (Karlsruhe, Germany) depicts a young man and a woman standing next to a ship. This article examines the iconographic details that allow us to recognize a farewell scene next to the stern of the ship. The importance of the ship’s stern in governing a voyage is emphasized by the stylis, a tall rod symbolizing the presence on board of the god who protected navigation. On this Campanian artefact of the 4th century BC, Zeus the Saviour is in fact evoked by the inscription painted on a tablet fixed on the rod itself.

RESUMEN

Una figura hydria roja de Capua custodiada en el Badisches Landesmuseum (Karlsruhe, Alemania) representa a un hombre joven y a una mujer parados al lado de un barco. Este artículo examina los detalles iconográficos que nos permiten reconocer una escena de despedida junto a la popa de una embarcación. La importancia de la popa de una embarcación en el gobierno de un viaje es enfatizada por el stylis, una vara larga que simboliza la presencia a bordo del dios que protegía la navegación. En este artefacto de Campania del siglo IV a.C., Zeus el salvador es evocado de hecho por la inscripción pintada en la tableta fijada a la vara.

位于德国卡尔斯鲁厄宫的巴登州博物馆收藏的卡普阿所出红图陶提水罐描绘了一个青年男子与一个女子站在一艘船的旁边。本文探讨了这一图像的诸多细节，从中我们可以辨认出这是一幅发生于船艉旁的告别场景。船艉在掌控航行中的重要性通过艉杆，这一象征船只保护神形象的高杆，得以强调。在这件公元前4世纪的坎帕尼亚手工艺品上，救世主宙斯的形式实际上是通过一块固定在高杆上的绘铭表现出来的。

المُستخلص

تبحث ھذه المقالة في التفاصیل الأیقونیة لھیدریا حمراء الشكل من كابوا والمتواجدة في متحف ولایة بادن (كارلسروه،ألمانیا) والتي تصور شاباً وامرأة یقفان بجوار سَفینة. وتتیح لنا ھذه التفاصیل التعرف على مشھد الوداع المُصور بجوارمُ ؤخرة السَفینة. تم التأكید على أھمیة مؤخرة السَفینة في التحكم في الرحلة وذلك من خلال وجود الستایلس، وھو قضیبطویل یرمز إلى وجود الإلھ علي متن السَفینة والذي قام بحمایة عملیة الإبحار. ومن الجدیر بالذكر بأنھ تم استحضارزیوس المُنقذ على ھذه القطعة الأثریة الكامبانیة والتي تعود إلي القرن الرابع قبل المیلاد وذلك من خلال النقش المرسومعلى لوح مثبت على القضیب نفسھ.
