Kalverev Syd: Report on the Excavation and Documentation of a Mid-13th Century Shipwreck from Storstrømmen, Denmark

ABSTRACT

Prior to the building of a new bridge over the Storstrømmen sound, the Viking Ship Museum performed an archaeological survey of the affected area. During the survey, medieval ship timbers were encountered, leading to the excavation of the aft port section of the bottom of a clinker-built vessel with external caulking laths and sintels. The building of the vessel is dendrochronologically dated to ca. AD 1250-55. The find was documented in situ using 3D photogrammetry and subsequently salvaged and acquired for further 3D laser scan documentation and conservation. This process is presented here in great detail, enabling the reader to build upon our experience, and thus contributing to the rapidly evolving best practise for underwater 3D recording. Additionally, a comprehensive programme of scientific analyses was initiated leading to elaboration on the interesting insights into the vessel’s working life.

RESUMEN

Antes de la construcción de un nuevo puente sobre el estrecho de Storstrømmen, el Museo de Barcos Vikingos (Viking Ship Museum) llevó a cabo una prospección del área que iba a ser afectada. Durante la prospección se hallaron maderas de una embarcación medieval, lo cual dio lugar a la excavación del fondo de la banda de babor de la popa de una embarcación construida a tingladillo y calafateada con listones y grapas (sintels). La construcción de la embarcación fue fechada dendrocronológicamente ca. 1250–55 AD. El hallazgo fue documentado in situ mediante fotogrametría 3D y fue rescatado, para su posterior escaneo 3D y conservación. Este proceso se presenta aquí en mayor detalle, lo que le permite al lector construir sobre la experiencia, con lo cual se contribuye a la rápida evolución de las buenas prácticas para el registro subacuático 3D. Adicionalmente, se inició un programa comprensivo de análisis científicos, que llevó a vislumbrar aspectos interesantes de la vida operativa de la embarcación.

在斯托海峡新桥建造之前，维京船博物馆对所涉及区域做了考古调查。在勘察过程中发现了中世纪沉船板材，因而进一步发掘出一艘以鳞状搭接建造并于外部用木条和铁渣填缝的船尾底部。树木年代学测定该船建造时间在公元1250-55年。沉船在现场通过3D摄影测量法记录，并在提取后做进一步的3D激光扫描记录及保存。本文详细介绍了这一过程以使读者可基于我们的经验，从而为快速发展的水下最佳3D记录实践做出贡献。此外，一项全面科学分析计划已经展开，旨在阐发对船舶工作寿命的一些引起关注的见解。

斯托海峽新橋建造之前，維京船博物館對所涉及區域開展考古調查。在勘察過程中發現了中世紀沉船板材，因而進一步發掘出一艘以鱗狀搭接建造並於外部用木條和鐵渣填縫的船尾底部。樹木年代學測定該船建造時間在公元1250-55年。沉船在現場通過3D攝影測量法記錄，並于提取後做進一步的3D雷射掃描記錄及保存。本文詳細介紹了這一過程以使讀者可基於我們的經驗，從而為快速發展的水下最佳3D記錄實踐做出貢獻。此外，一項全面科學分析計劃已經展開，旨在闡發對船舶工作壽命的一些引起關註之見解。
