Warwick: An Interim Report on Artefact Assemblage Recovered from the Early 17th-Century English Ship, Castle Harbour, Bermuda

ABSTRACT

The excavation of Warwick, an early 17th-century English ship wrecked in a hurricane, yielded more than 2,000 individual cultural objects, the largest and most significant being the articulated remains of the starboard section of the hull. This article details the objects salvaged and excavated from the site prior to 2008 and presents an overview of selected artefacts recovered during 2010–12 excavations by the authors. The objects included in this catalog are those that have been analyzed, already conserved, or are currently in various stages of conservation.

RESUMEN

La excavación del Warwick, un navío inglés de principios del siglo XVII que naufragó durante un huracán, arrojó más de 2000 objetos culturales individuales, entre los cuales los más grandes y significativos son los restos articulados de la sección de estribor del casco. Este artículo detalla los objetos recuperados y excavados del sitio antes de 2008 y presenta una revisión general de una selección de artefactos recuperados durante las excavaciones realizadas por los autores entre 2010 y 2012. Los objetos incluidos en este catálogo son aquellos ya analizados y ya conservados o que se encuentran actualmente en diversas etapas de conservación.

لقد أسفرت أعمال التنقيب في وارويك السفينة الإنجليزية التي تعود إلي أوائل القرن السابع عشر والتي تحطمت في إعصار، عن أكثر من ٢٠٠٠ قطعة ثقافية فردية، أكبرها وأهمها هي البقايا المفصلية من الجزء الأيمن لبدن السفينة. ولهذا يقدم هذا المقال القطع التي تم إنقاذها والتنقيب عليها في الموقع قبل عام ٢٠٠٨، إلي جانب تقديم لمحة عامة عن القطع الأثرية المختارة التي تم انتشالها خلال عمليات التنقيب ٢٠١٠ – ٢٠١٢ بواسطة المؤلفين. ومن الجدير بالذكر أن القطع المدرجة في هذا الكتالوج هي تلك التي تم تحليلها أو ترميمها وحفظها بالفعل أو هي الآن في مراحل مختلفة من الترميم والحفظ. .

Permission Statement

The authors excavated Warwick and collected primary data from 2010 to 2012 under the permit from the Bermuda Wrecks Authority and in collaboration with the National Museum of Bermuda. Although the authors hold the intellectual rights to all the excavation materials and publications, the original archival copies of the data were transferred to the National Museum of Bermuda for safe keeping.
