A Preliminary Report on the Late 13th- to Early 14th-Century Bontosikuyu Shipwreck Site, Selayar Island, South Sulawesi, Indonesia: A Case Study for Regional Capacity Building and Research

ABSTRACT

Between 2013 and 2015, the Republic of Indonesia’s Directorate of Preservation of Cultural Heritage and Museums held a series of capacity-building workshops at Selayar Island in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Maritime archaeologists and practitioners from various government and research institutions attended the training program, including foreign delegates from ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries. The program’s field school centred on the Bontosikuyu shipwreck site. This shipwreck is dated to the late 13th to early 14th century CE based on ¹⁴C dating of organic remains and ceramics analysis. It is considered one of the earliest shipwreck sites around the South Sulawesi region and is significant for understanding further the maritime trade of the eastern Indonesia area.

RESUMEN

Entre 2013 y 2015, la Dirección de Preservación del Patrimonio Cultural y Museos de la República de Indonesia llevó a cabo una serie de talleres de capacitación en la isla Selayar en Sulawesi del Sur, Indonesia. Arqueólogos marítimos y profesionales de diversas instituciones gubernamentales y de investigación asistieron al programa de formación, incluyendo delegados extranjeros de países de la Asociación de Naciones del Sudeste Asiático (ASEAN). La escuela de campo del programa se centró en el pecio Bontosikuyu, el cual está datado entre fines del siglo XIII y principios del siglo XIV de nuestra era, basado en dataciones por radiocarbono (¹⁴C) de restos orgánicos y en análisis de cerámica. Es considerado uno de los pecios más antiguos alrededor de la región Sulawesi meridional y es relevante para comprender mejor el comercio marítimo de la zona oriental de Indonesia.

2013年至2015年间，印度尼西亚共和国文化遗产与博物馆保护局在印尼南苏拉威西的塞拉亚尔群岛举办了一系列能力建设工作坊。来自不同政府和研究机构的海洋考古学家及从业人员参加了培训项目，其中包括来自东盟（东南亚国家联盟）国家的外国代表。该项目的田野基地是以Bontosikuyu沉船遗址为中心。根据有机遗存的14C测定和陶瓷分析，这艘沉船的年代在公元13世纪末至14世纪初。它被认为是南苏拉威西地区最早的沉船遗址之一，对于进一步了解印度尼西亚东部地区的海上贸易具有重要意义。

لقد عقدت إدارة الحفاظ على التراث الثقافي والمتاحف في جمهورية إندونيسيا سلسلة من ورش العمل الخاصة ببناء القدرات في جزيرة سيلايار بجنوب سولاويزي، إندونيسيا وذلك بين عامي ٢٠١٣ و٢٠١٥. وحضر البرنامج التدريبي علماء آثار بحرية وممارسون من مختلف المؤسسات الحكومية والبحثية، بما في ذلك مندوبون أجانب من اتحاد دول جنوب شرق آسيا (آسيان). وتركزت المدرسة الميدانية للبرنامج على موقع حطام سفينة بونتوسيكويو. ويعود تاريخ الحطام إلي أواخر القرن الثالث عشر وأوائل القرن الرابع عشر الميلادي وهذا بناءً على التحليل الذي تم اجراؤه للبقايا العضوية والخزف باستخدام الكربون المشع. ويعتبر موقع الحطام أحد أقدم مواقع حطام السفن حول منطقة جنوب سولاويزي وذو أهمية في فهم التجارة البحرية في منطقة شرق إندونيسيا بشكل أكبر.‏
