Abstract

In this research, the samarium doped barium sodium borate oxide and oxyfluoride glasses were prepared by melt-quenching technique. The density, molar volume, refractive index, absorption spectra, photoluminescence spectra (excitation spectra, emission spectra) and luminescence decay time of the glass samples were investigated. The absorption spectra, studied in the UV-Vis-NIR region, show the highest peak centered at 400 nm (6H5/26P3/2) in UV-Vis region and at 1227 nm (6H5/26F7/2) in NIR region. The emission spectra, excited by 400 nm excitation wavelength, show the emission peak centered at 562 nm (4G5/26H5/2), 600 nm (4G5/26H7/2), 646 nm (4G5/26H9/2) and 706 nm (4G5/26H11/2). The highest emission peak is the peak centered at 600 nm, corresponding to the 4G5/26H7/2 transition. The result show that the emission intensity of the oxyfluoride glass sample is higher than the oxide glass sample because the oxyfluoride glass owns less non-radiative transitions than the oxide glass.
