Abstract

The crystal and molecular structure of the mesomorphic compound 4(3″-Pentenyl)4′(cyano)1,1′-bicyclohexane having the molecular formula C5H9−C6H10−C6H10−CN has been determined by direct methods. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic system with space group P21/n, a = 5.609, b >= 31.390, c >=9.562 Å β >= 98.89° and Z >= 4. Least squares refinement leads to R >= 0.065 (Rw >= 0.081) for 2326 observed reflections. The packing in the solid crystalline state of the compound is discussed and is compared with that derived from X-ray diffraction data in the liquid crystalline state.
