Abstract

Measurements of splay (K ₁₁) and bend (K ₃₃) elastic constants in 7CB and 8CB are reported. The method involves measurement of voltage dependence of capacitance and K ₁₁ is obtained directly from the Freedericksz threshold voltage. K ₃₃ is extracted from the nature of the C- V curve by a method first suggested by Uchida and Takahashi⁴. Our results are in good quantitative agreement with the available results.
