Abstract

A series of polyimide-clay nanocomposite (PCN) materials consisting bicyclo rings and layered montmorillonite (MMT) clay were successfully prepared by solution intercalation reaction through thermal imidization up to 200°C. Poly(amic acid) (Citation6) was prepared through the reaction of 1,1-bis(4-aminophenoxy)methane (Citation4) and bicyclo[2,2,2]-oct-7-ene-2,3,5,6-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (Citation5) and then used for synthesis of nanocomposite materials. The resulting nanocomposite films containing 1, 3, 5, 10 wt% of organoclay were characterized by Fourier-Transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, wide-anglepowder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet-visible (UV/Vis) transmission, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. The introduction of MMT resulted in improved thermal stability.
