Abstract

Nanocomposites are a new class of materials containing ultrafine phase dimensions of the order of nanometers. Due to the size features of the filler, they possess properties not shared by micro and macrocomposites. The dispersed nanofillers are able to form platelets which distributed in a polymer matrix form layers able to produce a tortuous path which works as a barrier structure for gases, water vapors, etc. A high tortuosity leads to higher barrier properties and to a lower permeability.

This paper is a brief review of polymer nanocomposite barriers based on different groups of polymers such as plastomers, elastomers and polyblends. A short discussion on their applications in packaging industry, construction, coatings is also presented. Polymer nanocomposite barriers have a positive effect on the environment by reducing mainly packaging waste (metallic, made of glass, etc.) and allowing recycling.
