Abstract
The author discusses the role of the annexation of Crimea in returning meaning to the lives of Russian citizens. He focuses on the importance of war and threat perceptions to creating a significant role for the state in society, and in turn allowing citizens who work for the state to feel that they are fulfilling an important function in protecting the security of their country.
