Russia on the Eve of the Great Revolution of 1917

Notes

1. On the theory of modernization as it pertains to Russian history, see Istoriia Rossii (Citation2013).

2. For discussions of responsibility for the war, see Neilson (Citation2014) and Petrov and Pavlov (Citation2014). Meanwhile, attempts to whitewash German militarism by blaming all its political elites for “lunatically” leading Europe to war can still be found (Clark, Citation2012). One clearly politicized work blaming Russia for unleashing the world conflict was brought out in connection with the centennial of the war’s inception (McMeekin, Citation2011).
