This is the special issue of the papers presented at the Japan US Symposium on Flow Simulation and Modelling held at the International Center, Kyushu University on May 1–3, 2002. This symposium was sponsored by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Sciences and organized mainly by Professor Tayfun E. Tezduyar of Rice University, Professor Thomas J.R. Hughes of the University of Texas at Austin, Professor Mutsuto Kawahara of Chuo University and Professor Hiroshi Kanayama of Kyushu University. This seminar was held on an invited lecture basis, i.e. all papers presented at this seminar were limited only to invited ones. All papers presented at the seminar were original papers. All papers were reviewed by highly qualified reviewers and accepted as valuable contributions.
