Editorial: Volume 22 Preview and Manuscript Processing Statistics, in Brief

Welcome to the International Year of Statistics! The Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics (JCGS) began the celebration early with our December 2012 (Volume 21, Issue 4) special issue on networks and their applications. The current issue focuses on graphical statistics, with a featured discussion on InfoVis. Later in the year, we will devote an issue to advances in Markov chain Monte Carlo.

JCGS review times: Please see the online supplementary materials for a detailed summary of JCGS manuscript processing and review times. JCGS continues to push well over the 200 new manuscripts submission level per year, a surge from 120 manuscripts in 2004 to 230, 208, 204, and 257 manuscripts in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012, respectively. Our acceptance rate stands in the range of 21%–24% of the manuscripts submitted. During the period in which I handled all new manuscripts, July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2012, we received 651 submissions. A final decision was made by the editor (level 1 review) for 52% of these manuscripts, median time of 1 day to this decision. A final decision was made on 7% of the articles after review by the editor and associate editor (level 2 review), median time of 22 days to this decision. Of the remaining articles, 37% were sent out to referees (level 3 review), median time to first decision of 101 days, and 4% were withdrawn by the authors. JCGS instituted a single-blind default, with double-blind author option, review process in June 2011. The move was made to alleviate any difficulties in blinding supplementary material, particularly software packages and data, as well as to simplify the submission process. Additionally, JCGS switched to the ScholarOne manuscript submission system as part of a move to Taylor & Francis for publishing. Again we encourage you to peruse the online supplementary document to this editorial for detailed breakdowns of these summaries.
