Post-publication of the article, the author has noted that on page 7, under the paragraph ‘The emergence of full-time black journalists’, the following data need to be corrected.

1. The correct percentage of the black population in New Orleans in 1960 is 37% instead of 60%.

2. Also, the total New Orleans population in 1960 is corrected to 627,525 instead of 392,594.

These have now been corrected online.
