Military Community Colleges: An Introductory Examination

Pages 293-297 | Published online: 01 Feb 2019

ABSTRACT

This paper provides an introductory examination of a unique niche in higher education: Military Community Colleges. Through an overview that highlights the characteristics of the four military community colleges, it discusses the benefits of attending military community colleges and provides implications for practice, policy, and research; this paper seeks to provide a general overview of these under-researched community colleges. Higher education and the military appear to remain interconnected (Abrams, 1989). Therefore, with enrollment of military-connected students in community colleges expected to grow and attend these colleges (Williams-Klotz & Gansemer-Topf, 2018), a better understanding can further enhance the experiences of these students and may provide crucial information to non-military community colleges, which strengthens their organizations and higher education as a whole.
