Melancholia in the Writing of a Sixteenth-Century Spanish Nun

Pages 293-297 | Published online: 03 Jul 2009

Notes

* The terms “melancholy” and “melancholia” were used interchangeably during this era, and no consistent language distinguished states of disorder from normal temperamental variations. For brevity, I shall employ “melancholia” in what follows, although translations of Teresa's writing employ “melancholy.”
