Interventions in Native American communities during an era of assimilation

ABSTRACT

This “From the Archives” article provides the texts of two articles on Native Americans written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first, Alice C. Fletcher’s speech on “The Legal Condition of Indian Women,” appeared on pp. 237-241 of the Report of the International Council of Women, March 25 to April 1, 1888 ,published by the National Woman Suffrage Association, Washington, D.C., in 1888. The second, Gertrude Bonnin’s report of “A Year’s Experience in Community Service Work Among the Ute Tribe of Indians,” appeared in the American Indian Magazine, vol. 4, no. 4 (October-December 1916), pp. 307-310.
