For other pre-election musings on Bush's intelligence, see also Chapman 2000, Gitlin 2000, Noah 2000, Tapper 2000, and Wright 2000.

Moore and Slater 2003.

For compendiums of “Bushisms,” see Miller 2002, Bush and Weisberg 2002, Bush and Weisberg 2003, Weisberg and Bush 2004, Bush and Weisberg 2005, and Weisberg and Bush 2007. For accounts of the workings of the Bush administration by former White House insiders, see Clarke 2004 and Suskind 2004.

On Bush's ignorance of the differences between Sunni and Shia, compare Packer 2005, 96.

It's worth noting that, according to Suskind, O'Neill's assessment of Bush's intellect seems to have become increasingly less generous as his tenure as Treasury secretary continued.

On Bush's mockery of Tucker, see Noah 2005.

Packer is here quoting Secretary of the Army Thomas E. White's description of Paul Wolfowitz.

Frank Rich (2006, 3) speculates that the “senior advisor” was Karl Rove.

See also Mooney 2005.

In their construction of the profilers' authority, these moments are not unlike the scenes in Without a Trace (CBS, 2002–) that use flashbacks to illustrate witnesses' narration of events in the past. Unlike most flashbacks, however, the flashbacks in Without a Trace do not represent those witnesses' subjective memories of events; instead, they narrate infallibly what actually happened. Thus, the visual reconstruction of events in the past underscores, rather that undermining, the reliability of the narration.
