Anti-Racism and Anti-Colonialism in Canada: Identifying Key Components of Critical Pedagogy in Film

As discussed in the introductory article in this special issue, during the first year of work on the project, the team included Carl James, Yasmin Jiwani, Liss Platt, Sherene Razack, Rinaldo Walcott, and Jennifer S. Simpson. This is the group of individuals that offered input into the rubric.

The question of who practices racism and colonialism in Canada is complicated and does not have a formulaic answer. The terms whites and settlers to some extent name those with the power to practice racism and colonialism in Canada, as well as locate those who have historically had the power to oppress racialized minority and Indigenous communities. In this article, we are primarily reviewing the ways in which the films located responsibility for racism and colonialism. The films do not address the difficult distinctions in thinking about the practices of racism and colonialism between settlers, whites, racialized immigrants, and Indigenous people in Canada.
